Reading, Writing & Arithmetic
At breakfast this morning, I was reading a recent copy of the Wall Street Journal, and I could not believe the article that caught my eye. It basically said that even corporate leaders can’t write full sentences without spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors.
In essence, they weren’t sure whether it was related to texting or just laziness.
In any respect, the article I wrote recently, concerning the fact that a large proportion of college students can’t read sentences, is even more applicable now.
It appears that the leaders of some of our most significant corporations, just don’t care. It reminds me of the old saying, “take care of the small things and the big things will take care of themselves.” Well, I guess they failed that “critical thinking” course.
Another article, that I read recently, concerned the increase in “grade erosion” in college. This is a significant issue. However, colleges and universities appear to be sweeping this “under the rug” also.
What is happening? Has “tech” made us lazy! Is no one being held accountable? What has happened to the educational system in our country?
Obviously, the teachings of the past are no longer the teachings of today.
Ruth Chris Steak House restaurants have recently put out a ‘dress code” that makes you remove your hat during dinner. Also, business casual dress is required. No gym clothes, etc. That was always true for my generation, and you didn’t need reminding.
Where will this stop? Hopefully, soon!
